Sub Stream : Lawyer

A solicitor is a lawyer who deals with the law for the public and private sectors. A solicitor provides legal services to clients, provides legal advice, and drafts legal documents like wills, deeds and contracts.

Solicitor is a profession that is not regulated by any government but still requires a formal law degree from a recognized institution. In order to become a solicitor one has to complete three years of training as an apprentice with a qualified solicitor. One can also study law in their own country without going through an apprenticeship program.

In India, the term "solicitor" is not commonly used, and the legal profession is divided into advocates and attorneys. Here are the steps to become an advocate in India:

1. Obtain a Bachelor's degree: You must have a Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized university to practice law in India. You can pursue a three-year LLB course after completing a bachelor's degree in any discipline, or a five-year integrated LLB course after completing 10+2.

2. Enroll with the Bar Council of India (BCI): After completing your LLB, you need to enroll with the BCI to practice law. The BCI is the regulatory body for legal education and the legal profession in India.

3. Complete an apprenticeship: After enrolling with the BCI, you need to complete a one-year apprenticeship under a practicing advocate or a senior advocate.

4. Clear the All India Bar Examination (AIBE): The AIBE is a mandatory exam for all law graduates who want to practice law in India. The exam tests your knowledge of legal principles and procedures.

5. Get a job: After clearing the AIBE, you can start practicing law independently or work with a law firm or a corporate legal department.

Note: The requirements and procedures may vary depending on the state and jurisdiction you want to practice law in.
